The Talular Challenge
From Talular wiki
The TALULAR challenge is a collection of diagrams and drawings which can be seen on the next double page. It is a random arrangement of objects which can be found in the school or college environment and can be used for teaching, learning and assessment. The collection is a guide during a talular hunt which begins the establishment of a talular bank.
[edit] Challenges in the use of TALULAR
There are several challenges in the use of TALULAR
• It is a challenge to know which resources in the environment can be used for teaching and learning. The environment contains a lot of resources that we can use for teaching and learning and yet we often experience lessons that are taught without such teaching and learning resources.
• It is a challenge to identify one thing which can be used in several situations or subjects. The advantage is that you can create a wide range of activities with such a TALULAR. For example, bottle tops can be used as counters, for number identification, letter recognition, non-standard measurements, containers, wheels and coins in a shopping scene.
• It is a challenge to know several things which can be used in the same situation. The advantage of this is that if one thing is missing you always have alternatives that are readily available. For example, sticks, stones, seed pods, seeds, coins, bottle tops, tins, bottles, clay balls and rubber bands can be used to teach number value.
• It is a challenge to know how to use talular resources effectively and efficiently. Sometimes a teacher brings talular resources to class, but teaches the whole lesson without using any of the TALULAR brought to class. A deliberate effort must be made to learn and practise how to use the TALULAR in a wide range of activities.
• It is a challenge to establish learning centres in the classroom. These are displays under particular subject names such as English, Mathematics, Chichewa, Science and Agriculture. The displays encourage incidental learning before classes begin, during break and after classes.
• It is a challenge to establish a talular bank. Without proper storage talular resources are not sustainable. You will keep on making the same thing all the time.
• It is a challenge to be committed to making talular resources available to encourage joyful learning in the classroom. Normally, some people do not like the involvement in making talular resources available. They believe it is the government that supplies resources. If the government does not supply these, they think they have a ready excuse for why they do not include the use of TALULAR in their lessons.
• It is a challenge to establish a talular committee to spearhead production and use of TALULAR
